“The natural ratio is about 105 boy babies for every 100 girls; because boys are slightly more likely to die young, this leads to rough parity at reproductive age.”
What?? What’s the basis for this difference?

Impressive knowledge of Bibtex in Claude. This is a subtle error it just nailed. (And now I don’t have a ton of bibtex errors populating overleaf.)

If I’m Tim Cook, I’d announce a new assembled in US iPhone that is just taking the iphone guts and putting it into a new custom case. Call it the iPhone Edition like the Apple Watch. Sell a $30k gold version. Gift one to Trump. Repurpose your repair lines to make these. Win/win.

Numbers that don't pass the smell test.
Han et al. (6) estimated that the global cost of using air purifiers, including the purchase price, filter replacement cost, and electricity consumption, to keep indoor PM2.5 concentrations below 5 μg/m3—the annual limit recommended by the WHO (8)—could exceed $4 trillion USD per year.
From: www.science.org/doi/10.11…
$4 trillion per year is $500 per person – planet wide.
That’s like buying everyone on the planet a last-gen iPhone, every year. It’s simply unreasonable.
If I get a moment, I’ll try and read the article to find the assumptions underlying this, but it doesn’t seem reasonable.

I had the honor of co-chairing SIAM MMDS 2024 last year. We had some amazing plenary talks now making it to YouTube. Let me highlight first “The Emerging Science of Benchmarks” by Moritz Hardt youtu.be/ySXQm7NIV… for a deep dive into why overfitting ML benchmarks isn’t a problem!
